THE RELEVANCE of the service sector has come to the fore in the age of the slump Information Technology. The city played host to a brainstorming session by service sector representatives from the Government and private concerns, congregating at Hotel Keshari to deliberate upon "Redefining Services". Bhattacharya, Vice President UTI Bank, Lokanatah Sadhaangi, Chief Traffic Manager, East Coast Railways, L. Pradhan Vigilance Officer, PMG, Bhubaneswar.

The seminar organised by the Institute of Management & Information Science, Bhubaneswar emphasised the need for relevant changes in the service sectors.

"Although the changes are gradually taking place in all industries of the service sector, the intensity and direction of changes are the challenge of the day," said Director of the Institute of Management & Information Science, H.K. Pattnaik.

Over-emphasis on the primary and secondary sectors in India since independence had been rendering the contribution of the tertiary sector negligible. But people area gradually realizing the significance of the sector and hence rethinking of the existing policies in the service sector is a must. In times of retrenchment and in view of the attempts to be customer-friendly, the organisations must gear up to change according to the need of the hour, it was felt.

The seminar was also attended by Dr. K. K. Beuria, advisor to IMIS and other faculty members. The students had an enlightening interaction session with the Speakers in which many relevant issues were discussed. It was decided that similar seminars would be held at regular intervals in future.
